Fairbourne: Town Lost To The Climate Crisis
The village of Fairbourne sits just above sea level. The village is protected by a sea wall, earth banks and a network of drainage channels but is at critical risk of flooding. Rising global temperatures and sea levels have increased the risk of flooding across the UK. With this increasing drain on funds over the last half a century, Gwynedd Council has decided it can no longer afford to continue defending the village, with some calling Fairbourne the first UK village surrendered to the sea. The residents of Fairbourne are suffering economically as their land lost it's value overnight and without managing the climate crisis other councils will soon make the same decisions.
